ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR!
Brian Epstein had just died, and the Beatles had been taking part in the Maharishi's meditating sessions...it was a strange time for all of them. Some say that the film Magical Mystery Tour is the result of it all. While Paul McCartney was off in Denver, Colorado (? ! ?) to celebrate Jane Asher's birthday, he had a whim...to gather a group of friends, midgets, bizarre actors and freaks and travel the countryside in a bus coach...just to see what happened, and...film it! Since Epstein had died, Paul (Faul) had pretty much tried to fill the shoes, telling the boys when they would make records and so forth.
It was flying home on Tuesday April 11, 1967 that Paul had thought up the lyrics to the title song of his proposed film, Magical Mystery Tour. He was inspired by American Novelist Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters, who toured the United States in a psychedelically painted bus, served drinks laced with LSD and filmed whatever happend. On a borrowed napkin, he sketched out the film's content; ready to present it to his bandmates when he arrived in London. Supervised by Paul, on September 11 at 10:45 am The Beatles and their 39 member entourage began their 5 day tour, (although the bus was late because the logo had to be painted at the last minute.) starting from Central London and heading for Cornwall, filming...without a script and without knowing where exactly they were going , or what might happen. As luck would have it, nothing did. They filmed in several towns and villages. It was at Paul Raymond's Revuebar in London, a month later, that they filmed the Jan Carson strip scene, with Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's "Death Cab For Cutie" . "Your Mother Should Know " was filmed in a former US Army Airforce base in an aircraft hanger that was magically transformed into a glittering ballroom, in which The Beatles Danced through. Policemen, Eggmen in bathing caps and John filmed "I Am The Walrus" near the 32 concrete anti-blast walls that protected aircrafts in World War II. Other locations they filmed at were Widcome on Dartmoor, Taunton, Bodmin, Newquay, Watergate Bay and Porth. Perhaps the most endearing scene, "The Fool on the Hill" sequence also has a story to it. Filmed in Nice, France, it apparently started off as a fiasco, when Paul upon arriving in Nice, realized he hadn't had his passport. Oops! Fear not...call the lads at home and they'll rush it to him airfreight in a couple of hours. After finally receiving his documents...oops! No money was sent with them!!! Ring, ring... Lennon and Harrison directed a scene with "Happy Nat the Rubber Man" around a hotel pool. Scrapped on the cutting room floor was 90% of the film's 10 hours worth of shots, including a scene of Traffic (Steve Winwood) singing "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" . Slated for an hour long TV special, it was thought of by most as "the most expensive home movie." Shown on Boxing Day, 1967, 8:35 pm, it was seen in 3,930,000 homes. "Witless", "Colossal Conceit", "Rubbish", were some of the comments. Unfortunately, the film was shown in black and white...so even those with color TV's weren't able to experience the splendor that is Magical Mystery Tour. Let's face it... I couldn't imagine seeing "Flying" in black and White, there is just no point. Even though, later, the film was rerun in color, it was too late. The damage had already been done by the critics. Paul immediately came to it's defense, but to no avail. Critics called the film a disaster. But, today it is shown in college classes, film classes as well as studied furvously by Beatles Fans. I, for one, am a fan of it. Found at: www.angelfire.com/ab4/cavern/mmt.html

Lennon and Harrison directed a scene with "Happy Nat the Rubber Man" around a hotel pool.
WHAT A MARVELOUS LUNCH!
13. NICOLA is the VERY YOUNGEST LITTLE GIRL on the bus. "I'VE GOT A PRESENT FOR YOU!" says John. And he gives her a BIG RED BALLOON. She hasn't quite enough PUFF to blow it up for herself so JOHN and GEORGE help her.
14. In no time at all everybody is ready for lunch and the bus draws up beside a small cafe. Jolly Jimmy leads the way and all the people follow eagerly because they're HUNGRY! "WHAT A MARVELOUS LUNCH!" says everyone. AND IT IS!
15. There is Chicken Soup followed by Roast Beef and Carrots with Thick Brown Gravy to go over the Potatoes! A small band plays Jolly Tunes in the corner of the room. Nobody is enjoying himself more than HAPPY NAT.
16. "If I eat any more" says HAPPY NAT "I SHALL FALL ASLEEP!" "Then you'll MISS ALL THE MAGIC!" warns Little Nicola. While the waiters scurry away to get the pudding, the band plays a very exciting Spanish Dance.
17. "I'm no Spanish Dancer but I certainly know my onions!" laughs HAPPY NAT. Up he gets from the table and becomes a FAMOUS SPANISH BULLFIGHTER. After all that eating and all that dancing no wonder Happy Nat nods off!
18. So while the others tuck into Strawberry Ice Cream or Aunt Mary's Apple Pie, HAPPY NAT has a HAPPY DREAM...all about his adventures with a bunch of pretty girls beside the seaside!

Well, Cornwall overlooks the English Channel ...

Nothing about going via France. So why was Fool On The Hill filmed in France?

Perhaps the most endearing scene, "The Fool on the Hill" sequence also has a story to it. The tour was of 5 days. From September 11th to September 15th. Referred to "Faul" actually this episode happened to Paul. Paul was found witohut documents wandering as a "fool" on a hill in Nice, France On September 15th Brian and Ringo from England to France, John and Neil from Spain went France in a hurry to help Paul. George sang on Blue Jay Way: "There's a fog upon L.A. And my friends have lost their way We'll be over soon they said Now they've lost themselves instead" Yes, all the Beatles were there except him. On September 18th Brian and Paul started to return to London. Two of us riding nowhere spending someone's hard earned pay You and me Sunday driving Not arriving on our way back home We're on our way back home We're on our way home We're going home Two of us sending postcards writing letters on my wall You and me burning matches lifting latches on our way back home We're on our way back home We're on our way home We're going home You and I have memories longer that that road that stretches out ahead Two of us wearing raincoats standing solo in the sun You and me chasing paper getting nowhere on our way back home We're on our way back home We're on our way home We're going home You and I have memories longer that that road that stretches out ahead Two of us wearing raincoats standing solo in the sun You and me chasing paper getting nowhere on our way back home We're on our way back home We're on our way home We're going home

I wanted to add that I believe that Aunt Jessy is a symbol for Queen Elizabeth and that the Crown was somehow involved in dealing with releasing Paul from French custody. The Marvelous Lunch may actually be a courtroom... the tables form an arrow pointing to Sardinia Understanding that Nice is vital to the story seems obvious to me.. I also thought that the tug of war scene had much deeper meaning than first glance .. Also, on the bus, John is 'napping' and than has a 'kid', Nicola on his lap. Kidnapping Paul with Nicholas as bait?

Also, on the bus, John is 'napping' and than has a 'kid', Nicola on his lap. Kidnapping Paul with Nicholas as bait? Ahhhha! A metaphor for KID - NAPPING! DOH! How did I miss that? You have opened my eyes to so many things DZ. So maybe it was Nicholas who was kidnapped...to lure Paul into a trap. And who does George represent in that scene...Hallyday? I think Aunt Jessie was a dual symbol for Queen Elizabeth and for "Queenie" Epstein. Brian Epstein Blues (John Lennon)
What about Brian Epstein and his brother Sam? They was workin' in a coal mine doing what I am. And what about brother Andy, he's shuttin' down the fire.
But if you tell the Tom about his brother Sam, wah dap, a wah dap bop.... Wah dup a ba ba bow, about his brother Clyde, he's a dirty old man.
Well what about Brian Epstein, he's God damned in the jail. He's working in the coal mine sittin' dead as a fail His mother got a Queenie. Well, she's the queen of them all.

The two "Charles" on that stripe. The young Prince Charles on the left and an old Charles De Gaulle on the right. England vs. France It seems that England won. As in 1966 FIFA world cup championship in England See: www.answers.com/topic/football-world-cup-1966Group A England 5 points France 1 point. The same "quantity" of heads on both sides in the stripe above The man on the chair that looks "like dead" is barefoot like character "Paul" on "Abbey Road" cover and his nose il just like the "P" of Paul

In a conversation that appeared on the BBC Radio program 'Scene And Heard', George Harrison spoke with reporter Miranda Ward from the film set of 'Magical Mystery Tour'. George talks about the concept of the Beatles new film project, and also shares his interests in Indian culture and spirituality. GEORGE: "The contract we signed with United Artists is for three films, two of which we've done. The third one, the thing is, we can do it any time we want. We havent so far done the film because we didn't want to make a film just to make some money. We wanted to do a film that might mean something to either us or to the people who go to watch it. So the thing is, over the last year or two since 'Help', we've had thousands of ideas but they've all been 'Help' and 'Hard Day's Night' revisited. It's no good. We've got to have something good, how we visualize the film. It's got to be at least the difference between the song 'Help' and 'Sgt Pepper,' as the movie has got to be that progressed too. So we haven't made it until we feel it's right... and I think we should start it 'round about next February. And if we do, we'll probably end up by not having a big production team film it all." MIRANDA WARD: "Rather like you're doing this one." GEORGE: "Yeah. This part that we've been doing is mainly just to tie the whole show together, because it's called a Magical Mystery Tour, then this is just a typical coach tour, but anything can happen. You see, that's the difference because it's magic, then we can do anything. So these parts, these sequences, we just had a few ideas. It's mainly just to show the people getting on the coach and a few little things that happen during the course of the coach trip." MIRANDA WARD: "How does it feel to be out on the road again as 'The Beatles'?" GEORGE: "Uhh, yes. I dunno. I've never really known what it's been like as The Beatles. (laughs) Because, you see, The Beatles is still something abstract as far as I'm concerned. You know, it's something that other people see us as The Beatles, and I TRY to see us as The Beatles but I can't."MIRANDA WARD: "At the beginning, didn't you feel like a Beatle?" GEORGE: "Uhh, I suppose I did, yeah. In fact I do sometimes, you see, when it's in the midst of all this and people are saying 'Beatles this' and 'Beatles that,' then I've got to accept the thing that they think I'm a Beatle. I'm willing to go along with it, you know, if they want me to be a Beatle then I'll be one." MIRANDA WARD: "When did you first start becoming interested in Indian culture and religion?" GEORGE: "Probably about two years ago, and uhh... I don't really know exactly when, but when I first noticed that I was interested with the music first of all, I think, and along with that I'd heard stories of people in caves. Yogis, as they're known. People levitating and demateriealizing. (laughs) And doing all sorts of wonderous things. And then, through the music... with meeting Ravi (Shankar), it was great because he's a Braman which is a high sect. And uhh, just all the groovy people are bramans, like the scientists, religious people and musicians, and all those. And then in the end, I'd like to become this myself. I'd just like to have this quality that these people have, which is a spiritual thing. And I think with us having all the material wealth that we need... you know, the average person feels that if they had a car and a telly and a house, and that's where its at. But if you get a car and a telly and a house and even, you know, a lot of money, your life's still empty because it's still all on this gross level. And what we need isn't material, it's spiritual. We need, sort of, some other form of peace and happiness. And so, that's why the Indian people all seem very peaceful and as though they have found something, because they haven't had the material wealth. They've had to look at themselves for some answer, and they've found it inside themselves." Taken from: www.geocities.com/~beatleboy1/db91367.int.html
